Article Abstract
While excessive sneezing may be considered a manifestation of disease, inability to sneeze is a rarely described symptom.A recent report found this symptom in 1.1%of a psychiatric population in India. The most common association was with endogenous depression and schizophrenia;the symptom frequently remitted with treatment of the primary disorder. There are no similar reports in Western cultures. We report a young man with a medullary neoplasm who was unable to sneeze despite a sensory urge to do so,and we propose an explanation for this symptom based on animal studies.
